Hammocks & High Tea unveiled their Fall 2010 collection today, and we’re so excited to share it with you! This season, designer Karen Young returns with her signature tea towels, placemats, drawer liners and sachets, but also has introduced pillows and room/linen sprays – all of which are divine. This month, we’d love for you to “get to know” Karen Young, the founder and designer behind Hammocks & High Tea. Founded in 2007, Hammocks & High Tea is a home décor company that creates luxurious eco-friendly products infused with a modern Caribbean aesthetic. Below, Karen reveals what’s coming up in 2010 and some of her personal must-haves!

Q: What is your focus for Hammocks & High Tea in 2010?
A: This year, I’d like to focus on growing the retail section of the business. I think customers, especially now, are very focused on what they need, as well as what moves them. I think this will be imperative in learning what the future is for the brand. I would love to use this year, and the next few years, to develop the brand as a lifestyle. After all, everyone should be able to escape to the Caribbean when they get home. ;)

Q: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome thus far, as an entrepreneur?
A: I think the biggest obstacle has been balancing the artist’s desire to create with the business desire to produce. The perfect union of those two things happens when I make a product that also sells well. Although it can feel like an obstacle sometimes, it drives me forward but also keeps the fires burning because I’m consistently pushing myself to make something that I love and believe in first.

Q: What is your favorite fashion purchase for spring?
A: For someone who designs using bold color, I’ve always been shy about wearing colors. I started this spring with bright scarves and am slowly adding beautiful dresses to my wardrobe. I’m a lover of anything shoe and bag related, but I just bought a very girly, printed dress from Anthropologie. I’m looking forward to adding some ruffled pieces and bold prints!

Q: What are 3 things you use everyday?
A: 1) A juicer (the small business owner’s health insurance plan;)
2) A notepad/pen
3) Rosebud Salve

Q: What is something you would say about yourself that might surprise people?
A: I’ve got a big laugh for a small person. I love to laugh and it’s one area I refuse to substitute with a demure giggle, I crack myself, and others up, when the jokes are good!
