September’s “Getting to Know” features Lion in the Sun‘s very own Melinda Morris. Founded in 2002, Lion in the Sun is a Brooklyn-based, family-owned paperie in specializing in creative custom invitations, stationery and exceptional personalized service. Known for its “out of the box” wedding invitations, Lion in the Sun’s designs feature iconic city-scapes and modern graphics utilizing trend-setting techniques and materials. Take a moment to learn more about this creative, funny and ultra-talented lady!

Q: What is the single thing you love most about what you do?
A. The thing I love most about what we do is helping people achieve their vision for the special occasion, their wedding, bar mitzvah, birth announcement. Whatever it is, we are lucky to be part of something important and memorable in our clients lives. I love being able to help them create something that they are thrilled with and excited to send to their family and friends. There is nothing like that feeling of making people truly happy.

Q: As a husband and wife team at work, how do you find balance?
A. We naturally complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses which is a great asset when working together. Many of our responsibilities in the business are well defined and separated. But we are also great collaborators which helps when one of us has a melt-down. Gratefully we usually seem to be able to stagger those pretty well so we each take turns being the voice of reason and the strong shoulder. It can be challenging on a personal level not to have the business take over always. We have found a balance of lots of short one or two night get-away which we call “midweek weekends” to break up our crazy work schedules. It gives us some down time and time together and makes us feel less deprived of extended vaca time.

Q: What are three wedding trends you currently love?
A. I love the warm handmade home spun trend of weddings, I love the less formal personal rustic approach that lets couples be who they are with no pretention. For stationery, I am loving the trend of invites on wood. I think it is unique and fun and unexpected. I love the floral trend of using not traditional flowers but decorating with fruits, vegetable, succulents, terrarium and nests. Ok the pies… I love the non traditional wedding cakes – bring on the pie!

Q: What is something about yourself that might surprise people?
I’m excellent at the big picture and delegation but I’m not a good artist. I have a strong creative vision but no ability to make it reality. Our amazing and creative team are the real artists and are the ones who help me make my creative visions come to life. Thank god for them!

Q: What do you most look forward to in the Fall?
My birthday, our trip to Napa and the very long awaited launch of our new on-line company and very own custom invite line that has been a year in the making inspired by Brooklyn and created all by wonderful Brooklyn artists! (not necessarily in that order.
