Q: What is your focus for Prismera Design in 2010?
A: Now that Prismera has entered its fourth year, I’m really working to push the two sides of sales: wholesale and retail. I’ve never done much to get into stores, so this year, I’ve got my eyes set on making my work visible to store buyers by exhibiting at trade shows.

I’m also trying to be a better listener to my retail customers. They have been so wonderful in supporting my work and vision. I’d like to provide them with more customized service like extra personalized options for many of my products, as well as a new website format that I hope will make shopping even easier and more fun.

Q: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome thus far, as an entrepreneur?
A: I think one of my biggest problems was reconciling the difference between how I feel about my company and how I enabled the world to view it. As an entrepreneur, I am constantly faced self doubt. Every single thing that went wrong made me question myself, whether or not it was my fault.

As a result, I glossed over successes and represented my company poorly. It took me a year to stop answering the question “What do you do?” with “I make stuff and sell it.” I was endlessly serious and passionate about what I do, but completely unable to articulate that. Now when people ask, I explain that Prismera is a brand that I created and I design jewelry, home decor, and stationery (within that brand) to sell in a web-based shop. It’s much more accurate and encouraging to remind yourself of where you are in your journey. And that makes taking it to the next step that much more doable.

Q: What is your favorite fashion purchase for spring?
A: Cork wedges. I lived practically my whole life in flats and only recently discovered heels. It’s like seeing the world from a different perspective. Make sure they have a platform, especially if you’re not used to them. The cork makes the shoe light and easy to walk in. What makes it even better to me is that cork is a sustainable material. What! I know.

Q: What are 3 things you use everyday?
A: 1) Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream. I work with my hands a lot, so I need to wash them all the time. This stuff creates a protective layer on your skin immediately and isn’t greasy, so I can get back to work without waiting for it to absorb.
2) Mally makes an Evercolor Shadow Stick that I use as an eyeliner. It goes on like a gel so it doesn’t pull on delicate eyelids. You’ve got a few seconds to work with it and then it dries and stays on FOREVER. No joke.
3) My WACOM tablet. This is a public service announcement people; please buy one. Don’t get carpal tunnel!

Q: Where do you dream of traveling to, and why?
A: I don’t have so much a desire to go to a specific place, as much as I would love to have a native guide to anywhere I go; someone who can tell me where I can have the best local food and see the beautiful things that the people there have made. Someone once told me a story about how he went on a short trip to France and all he did was rent a car and drive up a hill overlooking a vineyard with a bottle of wine and fresh mussels. That sounds pretty perfect to me.
