Liz Libre of Linda & Harriett made her 2011 Calendar available starting late last week, and it’s another stunner! I’ve already placed my order and eagerly am awaiting it’s arrival. (Don’t wait – last year, they sold out in November!)

Don’t you just adore this Birthday Calendar from Linda & Harriett? Even though I was lucky enough to know that Liz was designing this a few months ago, I’m still so excited to see how beautiful it is (not that I expect anything else from her!). I just placed my order last week and can’t wait to receive it.

Getting To Know: Liz Libre

My brilliant colleague, Jamie Werner, had the wonderful idea of interviewing our very talented clients and other inspiring entrepreneurs. We’re calling the series “Getting To Know.” Each interview is composed simply of 5 questions about their lives, businesses and other tidbits – to let you get to know them a bit better. We hope this series will inspire and maybe sometimes, surprise you!

We’re kicking the series off with Liz Libre, the founder and designer behind Linda & Harriett. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Liz launched her letterpress paper goods company in 2007 and since then, she’s become well-known for her amazing talent and designs. I’m lucky to call Liz both a client and a friend, and am so excited to share this interview with you. Click behind the cut for our questions and Liz’s answers!

Q: What inspires you?
A: New ideas and good ideas. Humbleness. People with a sparkle in their eyes – who have an obvious passion for what they do or where they are in life. People who break physical and mental boundaries. If you’ve never witnessed an Ironman race in person, I’d highly suggest it. It’s an all-day goosebumps affair.

Q: What is the best thing you like about being an entrepreneur?
A: Having the final say. If it fails, it’s my fault. But when something works, it feels pretty darn good. That, and dropping everything to see my dad or a friend, smack in the middle of the day, without notice.

Q: What is something about yourself that might surprise people?
A: I did my senior art thesis on plungers – as in toilet plungers. I thought the plunger out of context was pretty amusing. Have you ever seen a plunger in a dining room? It’s gross! It does NOT belong there. So I pushed this out-of-context idea by first drawing the plungers, photographing it in different places and ultimately made about 30 plunger sculptures for my final show – all out of mixed media – chocolate, toilet paper, plastic googly eyes, pink feathers – lots of stuff. It was a crazy and fun year. I had never worked in sculpture before and was a little nervous about it. But I think it’s good to be scared about diving into something. Makes the process more interesting, more fun.

Q: Your success can be attributed to…
A: My parents. They allowed me to make my own decisions pretty early on in life and constantly supported and encouraged me. Not to say my dad didn’t question my decision to focus my senior year on toilet plungers or question when I quit my job to start L&H, but he didn’t tell me I was crazy either. (Thanks, Dad.) And, I’d say playing sports most of my life prepared me for life lessons like hard work and reward, hard work and disappointment, being a team player, being a leader, and being yourself whether you’re ahead or behind.

Q: What are three items you can’t live without?
A: Lately, my puffy Patagonia jacket – it’s been SO cold here! But in life, I’d say, excluding my family and friends (which goes without saying):
#1: Exercise – the best mood lifter.
#2: Laughter. I’d say exercise is best medicine number one, but laughing is a very close best medicine number two.
#3: Sunlight. I moved out of a dark apartment into a sunny one and you’d think I was a reviving plant. I live for the light streaming in the window.
